The Making of the Nepean - Day 10

Today is going to be HISTORIC. Today we go in search of the source of the Nepean River. To our knowledge no-one has ever been-to and seen the source. You can't Google 'the Source'. With research and maps in hand we head off south 130kms by road to a little place called East Kangaloon.

Using precise distance calculations we arrive at a gate almost hidden from the road 900m east of the intersection of Kangaloon and Kirkland roads. Be warned there is a sign here that reads, "No Entry Penalty $11,000". Jeff was worried. I checked the coin tray in the vehicle... "No worries, I've got it covered," I suggested.

The Making of the Nepean - Day 9

The Nepean Dam is our main objective today and after that we'll do a short detour to the Nepean, where it crosses beneath Avon Dam Road. We have to drive 74kms south to reach the dam so I've allocated 70 minutes for the journey including a coffee stop. I'm so generous to my crew.

On arival at the dam we park and set up for my daily intro, record that, then walk over to the dams' rim. It looks like a 'castle battlement'. Some time is spent setting up camera angles and videoing us walking around.

The Making of the Nepean - Day 8

Pheasants Nest Weir today and we were a bit hesitant. My research showed four different ways to reach this weir and none of then easy. The first path required us to get permission from a landowner but we found the gate locked and no way to contact them. The second path's gate was fenced in and the gate was locked. The third path we took led us onto property that was also fenced in with no gate to give us entry to the road to the weir we had seen on Google Maps. We were quckily runnung out of options.

Fortunately, we gained entry to the dirt road and after a drive of 8.2kms we arrived at a locked gate. We were totally unable to drive around this one - cliff on one side and ravine on the other - so we left the vehicle and walked the remaining 450m. Of course it was downhill and steep too, but fortunately it was a concrete road, which is unusual when we just came off a dirt road.

The Making of the Nepean - Day 7

We visited Bents Basin, The Rock and Victoria Bridge today. We were only going to go to the first two but we finished early due to both being short and easy to access. Bents Basin is a State Conservation Area and is the traditional land of the Gundungurra, Dharawal and Darug people. Also known as Gulguer (meaning whirlpool or spinning), Bents Basin is associated with an awful aquatic creature called Gurungadge or Gurungaty. This creature is prominent in the area's ancestral stories. Archaeological finds, suggest the area was also an important trading place. Bents Basin along with the adjoining Gulguer Nature Reserve protect a variety of Aboriginal rock art and artefacts.

The Making of the Nepean - Day 6

We visited another weir today called Theresa Park Weir and a bridge at Wallacia called Blaxland's Crossing. I earlier called the weir Gulguer Weir, before I knew better, because it is situated in the Gulguer Nature Reserve. I think the name I gave it is far better because of that.

We had thoroughly researched the weir site for Day 5 and knew this one was going to be difficult. According to a local, Mr Tedesco, the only way to reach the weir was from McKee Road and through a property he owned called 'Serengeritty'. I explained in Day 5 that the tennents wife, Dimity, would not allow us entry as Jamie was at work elsewhere and she wanted his opinion. I left my number for Jamie to ring me and we left. He didn't ring.

I deliberately picked today for the return to 'Serengeritty', as according to Dimity, Jamie was home on Sundays.
